Derek & Sarah Solomon
From ants to elephants and everything in between!
Derek spends much of his time recording sounds of the natural world – from ants to elephants and everything in between, creating soundscapes or audio pictures of the environment and its inhabitants that can be shared by everyone. Hopefully they will make you think differently about only using your eyes to take in nature. Sometimes we just need a little help to rediscover the art of listening.
Using a microphone and amplifier, the natural sounds in our soundscapes are brought into a close and intimate range, exposing vivid detail that may be entirely new to you.
Birds, mammals, insects and amphibians all produce sounds. Some of them, like hippos, whales, fish and a variety of aquatic insects communicate under the water; or like elephants, even under the ground. Many of these sounds are at levels that we cannot hear, but with the use of specialised microphones it is possible to bring them into our audible range.
Extensive research has shown that listening to sound from the natural world can reduce the physical and psychological symptoms of stress.
Sound recording has not only brought us much pleasure but has also led to collaborations with zoos and institutions to create unique soundscapes for their specific needs. Contact us should you need a special soundscape.
Special Interest Safaris
Derek has been leading special interest safaris throughout southern Africa for over 30 years. His wide range of wildlife interests includes bird and mammal behaviour, communication and of course sound.
Originally based in Harare
Originally based in Harare, Zimbabwe his initial focus was on birding safaris to remote destinations to show guests some of the country’s unusual species, then expanding to other activities such as elephant behaviour safaris in Hwange National Park, and searching for rhinos and wild dogs in the Save Valley Conservancy in the east of the country. Other safari destinations included Botswana, Mozambique, Namibia and South Africa. In between it was possible to record an extensive collection of natural sounds.
2003 - Relocating to Zambia
In 2003 he and his wife Sarah moved to the South Luangwa National Park in Zambia where he worked as a specialist guide for The Bushcamp Company. During this period, he also led safaris in South Africa, Botswana and Zambia for National Geographic Expeditions.
2008 - Relocating to South Africa
2008 saw Derek and Sarah relocating to South Africa where they now live in Raptor’s View, a small wildlife estate on the edge of Hoedspruit, a little town in the heart of South Africa’s bushveld, only a short distance from the Kruger National Park.
Publications and Digital Applications
He has published several books on animal identification and distribution as well as digital applications:
Birds of Zambia – a comprehensive app on the birds of Zambia with up to date distribution maps, photos and sound recordings.
Wild About Kruger – a detailed app on the National Park that includes the facilities as well as the wildlife to be found.
Animals in Action – a guide to the behaviour of the mammals of South Luangwa National Park.
