Nyika Plateau

The Nyika Plateau is a stunning mountain plateau offering rolling grasslands interspersed with small streams and pockets of evergreen forest, Brachystegia (miombo) woodland, large stands of Mountain Acacia and spectacular scenery. In places, it reaches more than 2600m in elevation; the climate is cool with temperatures rarely exceeding 26C.

roan The wildlife includes a wide variety of mammals, amphibians and reptiles. Commonly seen mammals include Leopard, Roan Antelope, Plains Zebra, Southern Reedbuck and Bushpig. At certain times of the year Elephant can be found feeding on the wild figs in some of the forest patches. Other exciting mammals include Blue and Red Duiker, Checkered Elephant Shrew, Tree Hyrax and Blue Monkey.

The park is renowned for its spectacular wildflowers including more than 200 species of terrestrial and epiphytic orchids. The varied habitats support an amazing variety of birds, many seen nowhere else in the country.

It is the birding that really excites us here and is the focus of this adventure.

Some grassland and bracken briar specials include Denham’s Bustard, Hildebrandt’s Francolin, Red-rumped and Blue Swallow, Mountain Yellow Warbler, Black-lored Cisticola and Mountain Marsh Widowbird. Patches of flowering proteas and ericas may attract Red-tufted Malachite Sunbird.

Possible forest species include Fulleborn’s Boubou, Pink-breasted Turtle Dove, Bar-tailed Trogon, Moustached Green Tinkerbird, Sharpe’s Akalat, White-chested Alethe, Brown-headed Apalis and Waller’s Starling to name but a few.

Brown Parisoma is a special to look for in the Mountain Acacia canopy and miombo woodland specials include Pale-billed Hornbill, Central Bearded Scrub Robin, Trilling Cisticola, Boehm’s Flycatcher, Anchieta’s Sunbird and Stripe-breasted Seedeater.

We stay at Chelinda Lodge which is set high up on the plateau with views of the rolling grasslands often dotted with herds of Roan Antelope and Eland. The spacious log cabins (with en suite bathrooms) stretch out from the central complex which houses the lounge, dining and bar area.

Activities include game and birding drives and walks with Derek Solomon and a local specialist bird guide.

The Itinerary
28 November - Meet in Lilongwe, Malawi and overnight at Heuglin’s Lodge in the quiet northern city suburbs on a dinner, bed & breakfast basis.
29 November - Charter to Nyika Plateau for 5 nights at Chelinda Lodge on an all-inclusive basis (drinks & laundry for your own account).
4 December - Charter back to Lilongwe to connect with flight SA171 to Johannesburg.
