Mashatu Game Reserve
South East Botswana
Mashatu – Land of the giants. Aptly named, this fabulous reserve is home to a range of very large creatures including the massive Mashatu Tree; elephant (one of the largest populations of elephant found on any private reserve in Africa); lion and leopard (Mashatu is renowned for its amazing leopard sightings); huge numbers of giraffe as well as large herds of eland, the largest antelope in Africa. On the bird front the ostrich (Africa’s largest flightless bird) and the Kori bustard (one of the largest flying birds in the world) all make this a spectacular wildlife destination. And added to this there is an equally amazing variety of other mammals and birds, plus various archaeological and stone age sites.
Mashatu Game Reserve lies in the extreme south-eastern corner of Botswana with the Limpopo River as its southern boundary. It houses two camps – Main Camp offering 14 luxury suites, a large swimming pool, and main lounge and dining area overlooking a busy waterhole. There is a Discovery Room which has an extensive collection of artifacts, animal skulls and reference material.
Just 30 minutes away is Mashatu Tent Camp where 8 private walk-in tents are located under huge shady trees. Here meals are served either in the open-air thatched gazebo, or in the boma (enclosure) overlooking the floodlit, well-populated waterhole.
Mashatu offer cycling and horse riding safaris in addition to the traditional game drive and walking adventures. The mix of riverine vegetation and wide open habitat makes this the ideal venue for wildlife photography and an underground hide situated in front of a waterhole is an added attraction for the photographic enthusiast.
